Severe Weather Alert Descriptions

Areal Flood Watch  Statement as of 9:40 PM CDT on September 18, 2014

... Flood Watch now in effect through 7pm CDT Friday evening...

The Flood Watch is now in effect for

* a portion of southeast Texas... including the following
counties... Austin... Brazoria... Chambers... Colorado... Fort
Bend... Galveston... Harris... Jackson... Liberty... Matagorda...
Montgomery... Waller... Washington and Wharton.

* Through 7pm CDT Friday evening

* showers and thunderstorms have ended over the area for tonight.
However additional showers and thunderstorms may develop along a
frontal boundary from south of Brenham to Houston to Galveston.
These areas have already received 1 to 3 inches of rain on
average with some localized areas of 5 inches of rain. Any
additional rainfall will quickly run off and cause flooding in
low lying areas and allow for bayous to quickly rise. These
storms will again be capable of 2 inch an hour rainfall rates
and another 1 to 3 inches of rainfall will be possible. This
additional rainfall could cause flooding again.

* Timing... storms could develop again south of Brenham from 4am to
9am with additional storms through the afternoon. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms may continue into the late afternoon
and dissipate with the loss of day time heating.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to
cross safely. Vehicles caught in rising water should be abandoned
quickly. If your vehicle stalls... abandon it and seek higher
ground immediately. Rapidly rising water may engulf your vehicle
and its occupants and sweep them away. Move to higher ground.

Turn around... don't drown!

NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Texas
955 PM CDT Thursday Sep 18 2014

..Flood Watch extended into Friday...

Update...
evening forecast update.

&&

Discussion...
area radar show showers and thunderstorms coming to an end across
much of southeast Texas. There is still some activity over c Texas which seems
to be dissipating except for one strong storm east of San Antonio.
The latest runs of the rap/hrrr are on track with this evolution.
Both models show storms redevelopment during the morning hours
mainly south of Brenham towards Colorado/Austin counties. Activity
then spreads along a boundary towards Houston/Galveston later in
the morning. Given that there is still a very moist tropical
airmass over the area...precipitation water values around 2-2.3
inches...and northwest flow aloft with a trough axis passing by...think
heavy rainfall still a threat for the morning hours and possibly
early afternoon on Friday. Storms could still produce 2 inches of
rain in an hour which with already saturated grounds would cause
flooding from runoff. Decided to cancel the watch for a few
counties to the north of Houston but will maintain watch for
Brenham...Houston...Galveston southward. Main changes to the
forecast were to adjust probability of precipitation/weather grids for this scenario and adjust
maximum temperatures. Could be a day in which there is just enough heating to
support storms but not enough to reach upper 80s. Updated Flood
Watch has been sent and new forecast will be out shortly.

Aviation...
precipitation coverage decreasing across the region this evening
with the exception of a small rain showers overhead of cll holding
visibility down at the moment. Expect another mostly quiet night
with low stratus possible again for the northern sites. Activity
will develop to the west and south of the terminals again early
Friday and move into the region with daytime heating. Not
expecting as much coverage as today so will keep only vicinity
mention for most sites with this issuance. 38
