Severe Weather Alert Descriptions

Record Report  Statement as of 2:18 am CDT on July 01, 2015

... Record daily maximum rainfall set at Houston intercontinental
yesterday...

A record rainfall of 2.26 inches was set at Houston intercontinental
yesterday. This breaks the old record of 1.52 set in 1948. June 2015
was the eighth wettest June in city history. It was also the third
wettest may-June in city history with 25.56 inches of rain. This
amount only trails 25.66 inches in 2004 and 29.84 inches in 1989.

Public Information Statement  Statement as of 7:29 am CDT on July 1, 2015

... June 2015 continues recent trend of above normal rainfall...

The month started out dry but moisture levels began to increase
during the second week of the month. Tropical Storm Bill made
landfall on Tuesday June 16th but the effects from the storm
started days earlier with periods of heavy rain beginning on the
13th. Parts of Galveston County received between 4 and 6 inches of
rain on the 13th. Rainfall varied across southeast Texas during
the month with most locations receiving heavy to excessive
rainfall. Tropical Storm Bill brought heavy rain to Jackson...
Wharton... Matagorda... Austin... Waller and Washington counties on
its trek to the north. Parts of Jackson and Wharton counties received
between 10 and 14 inches of rain. 13.78 inches of rain was reported just
west of Ganado on June 16th and 17th. The heavy rain produced a rapid
rise on area rivers and significant flooding closed parts of US Highway
59 between Wharton and Edna. The greatest monthly rainfall (first order
and co-op sites) total reported in the area was 12.46 inches in Baytown
with El Campo coming in a close second with 12.41 inches. The driest
location in the area was Galveston with only 2.75 inches of rain followed
closely by Houston Westbury with 2.92 inches of rain... quite a contrast
from may when this location measured 18.69 inches of rain.

Some miscellaneous rainfall tidbits to wow your friends at your
next get together include:

Baytown has endured four consecutive months with rainfall at or
exceeding 10 inches.

        March April may June total
        11.72 12.75 16.13 12.46 53.06

The current 2015 rainfall total for Baytown is 60.72 inches which
exceeds the 1981-2010 30 year normal. The 30 year average rainfall
for Baytown is 59.92 inches. Other communities that have exceeded
their normal annual rainfall include Brenham... Washington State
Park and Caldwell. Bellville has recorded 40.67 inches of rain in
2015 and this is just shy of their 30 year normal annual rainfall.

The city of Houston has recorded two consecutive months with
rainfall exceeding ten inches. The 2015 rainfall total is now
41.83 which is 17.51 inches above normal. This is the third
wettest start to a year in city history. Only 2004 (45.02) and
1993 (43.33) were wetter than this year.

The may/June rainfall total was 25.56 inches and this is the
third wettest may/June rainfall total in city history. Only 1981
(29.84) and 2004 (25.66) were wetter.

Temperatures were close to normal during June. The temperature did
not reach 95 degrees at Bush iah or at College Station. This is
the second consecutive year that the temperature did not reach or
exceed 95 degrees during the month of June. The city of Houston
extended its streak of consecutive days below 100 degrees to 665
days which is the 27th longest streak in city history.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Texas

Discussion...
see 12z aviation discussion.

&&

Aviation...
a slightly drier air mass is in place this morning but conds
should once again moisten during the afternoon. Convective temperatures
a few degrees warmer than yesterday so not expecting much in the
way of precipitation this morning. A convective complex over south Texas will
likely produce an outflow that will help to initiate convection
between 17-19z so will carry thunderstorms in the vicinity for area taf sites during the
afternoon. Activity should wane by sunset with generally VFR conds
expected overnight. Some patchy fog will be possible by 12z
Thursday but did not mention in tafs at this time. 43

Previous discussion... /issued 402 am CDT Wednesday Jul 1 2015/

Discussion...
yesterday/S rainfall /with some locations around the Houston
metropolitan receiving 3 to over 5 inches in some locations/ has allowed
overnight temperatures to fall into the upper 60s to low 70s as of
3 am CDT this morning... a few degrees cooler than lows typically
observed for July 1. Little has changed in the upper level pattern
over the past 24 hours for southeast Texas with weak diffluent
northerly flow aloft. Regional radar mosaic early this morning
shows little in the way of rain for southeast Texas with a few
showers over the north central Gulf and a larger complex of
showers and thunderstorms stretching from near Brownsville south
towards Tampico...Mexico.

This complex appears to be associated with an upper level
inverted shortwave trough stretched along the Lower
Texas/northeastern Mexico coasts and will be an area to monitor
today as this trough moves to the north. Some high resolution
guidance /4 km NCEP WRF...arw...nmm/ moves the associated
thunderstorm complex along the Texas coast this morning...
reaching the Upper Texas coast by early afternoon. However... the
rap and the nam12 show very little in the way of rainfall from
this disturbance for southeast Texas as their solutions offer
slightly different trajectories for the trough... and this will be
the big determining factor for whether parts of southeast Texas
sees another round of thunderstorms this afternoon from this
feature.

Based on latest radar trends in the thunderstorm complex pushing
to the northwest of Brownsville as well as 00z upper air
observations and regional VAD wind profilers showing easterly
steering winds /away from the region/... think the trough and bulk
of the associated rain with it will remain to the west. Similar to
yesterday however... any outflow from this complex could reach the
region and provide another focusing mechansim for shower and
thunderstorm development. Storm motions will be slow /south to
southwest at 10 knots or less/ and this combined with the
potential for brief heavy rain could lead to a localized flooding
threat. However... will continue to monitor and update forecast
based on trends.

Despite all that... given some wind speed convergence along the
Upper Texas coast this morning as well as precipitable water
values approaching 1.8-1.9 inches this afternoon and convective
temperatures roughly around 86 to 89 degrees... isolated to
scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible for the
marine... coastal... and inland zones throughout the day. Think
20-40 probability of precipitation covers this well and anticipate activity to diminish
this evening with loss of daytime heating. A middle to upper ridge
building in and lower precipitable water values will help limit
convective activity on Thursday /but cannot rule out a stray
shower or two/. Otherwise... high temperatures today and tomorrow
expected to be in the low 80s to middle 90s with overnight lows in
the middle 70s to near 80.

Relatively dry weather will continue Thursday night in to
Friday... with increasing rain chances heading into the Holiday
weekend as another surge of Gulf moisture returns to the region.
Upper ridging looks to build over the Southern Plains next week...
with warmer and drier conditions appearing to be on tap for
southeast Texas.

Huffman

Marine...
high pressure over Florida and low pressure over the
Central Plains will maintain onshore winds through Saturday. The
onshore flow will strengthen in response to a tightening pressure
gradient Saturday night through next Tuesday. Seas will gradually
build through Sunday. 43
