NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Texas
445 am CDT sun may 1 2016

Discussion...
as confirmed by current radar pictures...a gradual return of deeper
Gulf moisture is underway from the southeast. By the end of the
afternoon we're looking at 1.5-1.7" precipitable waters to be resident across
the southeast 2/3 of the region. At the surface a nearly stationary
frontal boundary will linger across the area today...probably
meandering northwest/southeast of the Highway 59 corridor into
late evening. Combination of deepening moisture...daytime heating
and this boundary should lead to increasing shower/thunderstorm coverage
through the day. Most locations will probably not have any
significant hazardous weather issues...but we're never big fans of
boundaries draped across the region this time of year. Will need
to keep an eye out for localized heavier downpours should any cell
mergers/collisions et cetera occur that would enhance rain rates...especially
region between a possible seabreeze and the frontal boundary.

By late afternoon and overnight...more of southeast Texas should be
situated in the lfq of the jet. A series of weak impulses
embedded in the west-southwest flow aloft will further enhance large scale
lift and allow gradual expansion in precipitation coverage. Precipitable waters remain
respectable...still 1.5-1.7" southeast of the frontal boundary...but not
as deep as we've recently seen. Will remain on the outlook for any
small scale processes that'll enhance rain rates...but suspect
these will be more localized issues.

Stationary front should get a needed southward push and offshore
sometime Monday. Fwiw...model consensus is during the morning
hours. Precipitation will then taper of and we'll head into a much needed
drying trend as upper ridge builds into the region during the middle
and late week time period.

All that being said...there is still an above average degree of
forecast uncertainty in the next 24-36 hours regarding the "what,
where, when & how much" questions. Due to recent rains...there is
not a large amount of wiggle room regarding the amount of precipitation
we can handle especially along & north of I-10. I'd encourage
checking back in on the latest weather & forecasts throughout the day
and night. 47

&&

Marine...
generally light to moderate onshore winds to prevail today with the
cold front lingering over inland areas of southeast Texas. This boundary will
be moving off the coast late tonight/early Monday morning. Light to
moderate offshore winds should develop in the wake of the front for
the much of the week. Onshore winds are not expected to return over
the Upper Texas coast until perhaps late Friday. A deepening storm system
over the Central Plains will help to strengthen these onshore winds
during the next weekend time frame. No advisories/caution flags are
anticipated until then at the earliest. 41

&&

Aviation...
somewhat tricky taf package expected at 12z with the slow approach/
subsequent stalling of a surface boundary over southeast Texas. Ahead of the line
isolated/scattered rain showers possible this morning along with lower cigs/vis. How-
ever behind the front drier air/NE winds are prevailing. But in the
areas right along the front...a mixed bag of patchy fog/lower ceilings/
very light precipitation. Models indicating a more active turn of events for
this afternoon as the boundary waffles over the region. Daytime heating/
weak disturbances moving in from the west/SW should help to produce an
increased chance of scattered thunderstorms and rain. Best sites for this include iah/hou/sgr/
lbx for this aftn/eve. 41
