NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Corpus Christi Texas
406 am CDT Sat may 25 2013

Short term (today through sunday)...main forecast challenge for
short term period is chances of precipitation. Warm air advection early this morning is
interacting with an area of dvpa to allow for renewed development
of showers and thunderstorms over portions of the coastal Bend.
Weak short wave troughs from 700 mb to 500 mb are forecast to slowly move east
across south central Texas resulting in continued DPVA across County Warning Area
today. Combination of DPVA...an increasingly unstable
airmass...and continued low level moisture transport should allow
for a scattering of showers and thunderstorms to continue today.
Greatest chances should be across the east this morning with areal
coverage gradually shifting west this afternoon. Activity should
begin to wane by this evening as instability diminishes and middle
level vorticity maximum shifts north and east of the area. An additional
weak short wave trough on Sunday will skirt across the region.
However...atmospheric moisture depth is forecast to be drier than
today and thus only a slight chance of precipitation is forecast
at this time. Maximum temperatures today will likely be affected by precipitation
and overall have tried to account for thicker cloud cover today
and more sunshine on Sunday.
&&

Long term (sunday night through friday)...a weak upper level ridge
over northeast Mexico Sunday night will build into Texas Monday and
slide east of the area by Wednesday. Surface ridge will build into
the northern Gulf of Mexico pushing drier air into the region for
Memorial Day into Wednesday. Low pressure developing over the High
Plains Tuesday and Wednesday as an upper level trough moves into
southern rockies Wednesday will lead to an increase in the pressure
gradient here with breezy conditions inland/Small Craft Advisory conditions for the
coastal waters. 00z European model (ecmwf) model is a little more progressive with
the upper trough moving across the southern rockies middle week as the
other models have been showing. Enough moisture return will occur
by Thursday such that isolated convection will be possible as the
upper trough lifts into the Southern Plains. Removed probability of precipitation on Friday
as the upper trough is expected to lift well to the north.
