Severe Weather Alert Descriptions

Public Information Statement  Statement as of 7:45 PM EDT on July 1, 2015

... June 2015 was warmer than normal with near to below normal
rainfall across east central Florida...

June started off with near normal temperatures and scattered showers
and storms most afternoons. A strong high pressure ridge built in
across the region mid month and lingered with a hotter and drier
weather pattern persisting over central Florida. Overall these
conditions dominated and led to warmer than normal temperatures and
generally near to below normal rainfall for June.

.Temperatures...

A weak ridge across the area early in June allowed the East Coast
sea breeze to move inland in a timely manner to maintain near normal
temperatures of mid to upper 80s along the coast to upper 80s and
low 90s over the interior. Toward the middle of the month the
Atlantic high pressure ridge at the surface built back across the
region as a more dominant ridge settled in aloft. This stronger and
deeper high pressure pattern kept temperatures above normal for an
extended period with highs in the mid 90s over the interior and low
to mid 90s along the coast. Several record highs and warm lows were
broken at climate sites across the area from the 13th to the 22nd.
Most notable was the high temperature of 100 degrees at Orlando
International Airport on the 19th... which tied the record for that
day set back in 1998 and was also the first time Orlando had reached
100 degrees since July 3rd of that same year.

The high pressure ridge shifted south of the area into late month
with southwest flow delaying or preventing development of the East
Coast sea breeze. This kept temperatures above normal... especially
along the coast. Vero Beach actually broke their record high
temperature three days in a row from the 28th through the 30th with
highs in the mid 90s.

Overall average temperature departures for the month were around 1
to 2 degrees above normal. This led June 2015 to rank in the top ten
warmest for all primary climate sites.

Daily record temperatures for the month:

Daytona Beach:
-June 22nd: tied record high of 96 degrees last set in 2009... 1998
and 1990.

Orlando:
-June 19th: tied record high of 100 degrees last set in 1998.

Melbourne:
-June 13th: record warm low of 80 degrees. Previous record was 78
set in 2005 and 1956.
-June 14th: record warm low of 80 degrees. Previous record was 77
set in 2010.
-June 15th: record warm low of 79 degrees. Previous record was 78
set in 2009.

Vero beach:
-June 13th: record warm low of 80 degrees. Previous record was 78
set in 2006. This also tied the highest minimum temperature recorded
in the month of June.
-June 14th: record warm low of 79 degrees. Previous record was 77
set in 1958.
-June 28th: tied record high of 97 degrees last set in 1950.
-June 29th: record high of 96 degrees. Previous record was 94 set in
1997.
-June 30th: tied record high of 95 degrees last set in 2000.

Average temperature values for June 2015 at the four primary climate
sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided
if in the top 10):

-Daytona Beach had an average monthly temperature of 81.3 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.4 degrees above normal. This ties 1952 as
the 7th warmest June on record for this site.

-Orlando had an average monthly temperature of 83.0 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.6 degrees above normal. This ties 1987,
1973, 1952 and 1950 as the 6th warmest June on record for this site.

-Melbourne had an average monthly temperature of 81.0 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 0.6 degrees above normal. This ties 1952 as
the 7th warmest June on record for this site.

-Vero Beach had an average monthly temperature of 81.9 degrees
fahrenheit, which was 1.7 degrees above normal. This ranks as the
3rd warmest June on record for this site.

.Rainfall...

Onshore flow allowed the sea breeze to move inland most days early
in June with scattered showers and storms generally forming each
afternoon. However greatest precipitation amounts usually fell over
the interior or toward the West Coast of Florida. An exception was
on the 10th when higher coverage of afternoon showers and storms
brought widespread rainfall to east central Florida with both
Melbourne and Vero Beach breaking their rainfall records for the
day. Precipitation decreased during the middle portion of the month
as a strong ridge aloft suppressed development of afternoon
convection. As this ridge weakened and a deeper southwest flow
persisted later in the month... an increase in showers and storms was
observed over the area.

Total rainfall amounts for the month were generally near to lower
than normal. Some of the greatest precipitation deficits... up to 4
to 5 inches... occurred along the Treasure Coast. In fact Stuart had
their driest June on record only receiving 1.83 inches for the month.

Daily record rainfall for the month:

Orlando:
-June 26th: record rainfall of 2.54 inches. Previous record was 2.42
inches set in 1999.

Melbourne:
-June 10th: record rainfall of 1.50 inches. Previous record was 1.35
inches set in 1975.

Vero beach:
-June 10th: record rainfall of 3.12 inches. Previous record was 1.75
inches set in 1997.

June 2015 rainfall totals for the four primary climate sites
across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in
the top 10):

-Daytona Beach received 5.39 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.44 inches below normal.

-Orlando received 6.79 inches of rain for the month, which was 0.79
inches below normal.

-Melbourne received 6.25 inches of rain for the month, which was
0.46 inches below normal.

-Vero Beach received 4.91 inches of rain for the month, which was
1.76 inches below normal.

Cooperative observer station rainfall rankings:

-Stuart only received 1.83 inches of rainfall for the month, which
ranked as the driest June on record for this site. The previous
record was 1.89 inches set in 1981. Records for Stuart go back to
1936.

NWS Forecaster Discussion

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
230 PM EDT WED JUL 1 2015

.DISCUSSION...

CURRENTLY-TONIGHT...SEA BREEZE ALONG THE VOLUSIA COUNTY COAST NOW
UNLIKELY AS SHOWERS AND STORMS ARE ALREADY PUSHING OFFSHORE...BUT
FARTHER SOUTH SHOULD STILL SEA SEA BREEZE FORM AND MOVE SLOWLY
WESTWARD WITH FARTHER MOVEMENT INLAND SOUTH OF MELBOURNE. ISOLATED
TO SCATTERED CONVECTION WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP ALONG THE MORE
ACTIVE WEST COAST SEA BREEZE AND SHIFT EASTWARD THROUGH THE AFT.
GREATEST STORM COVERAGE AND BEST CHANCE FOR ISO STRONGER STORMS
EXPECTED TO OCCUR ALONG SEA BREEZE/OUTFLOW BOUNDARY COLLISIONS NEAR
THE NRN BREVARD COAST SOUTHWARD ACROSS INTERIOR COUNTIES FROM LATE
AFT INTO EARLY EVENING. MAIN STORMS THREATS WILL BE STRONG WIND
GUSTS UP TO 40 TO 50 MPH...SMALL HAIL AND FREQUENT LIGHTNING.

CONVECTION AND ANY DEBRIS CLOUD RAINFALL WILL DECREASE IN COVERAGE
INTO LATE EVENING WITH RAIN CHANCES ENDING BY MIDNIGHT. CLOUDS WILL
DECREASE WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE LOW TO MID 70S.

THU-FRI...ATLC RIDGE AXIS REMAINS NEAR TO JUST NORTH OF LAKE
OKEECHOBEE REGION INTO LATE WEEK. THIS WILL MAINTAIN A RELATIVELY
LIGHT S/SW FLOW OVER THE AREA WITH THE SEA BREEZE DEVELOPING EARLIER
AND WITH MORE INLAND MOVEMENT SOUTH OF THE CAPE EACH AFTERNOON.
MODELS SHOW OVERALL MOISTURE INCREASES SLIGHTLY DURING THIS TIME
FRAME WITH PW VALUES AROUND 1.7-1.9 INCHES WHICH SHOULD BE
SUFFICIENT FOR SCT AFT SHOWERS AND STORMS OVER THE AREA. BEST CHANCE
FOR RAIN WILL BE WITH ANY BOUNDARY COLLISIONS LATE IN THE DAY WHICH
UNDER THE FLOW REGIME WILL BE FAVORED ALONG TO JUST EAST OF THE I-4
CORRIDOR AND FARTHER SOUTH OVER INTERIOR AREAS WEST OF I-95. WILL
KEEP POPS IN THE CHANCE RANGE FROM 30-50 PERCENT WITH SLIGHT CHANCE
ALONG THE TREASURE COAST DUE TO EARLIER SEA BREEZE START AND WEAKER
STEERING FLOW TO PUSH STORMS BACK TOWARD THE COAST.

TEMPS WILL RANGE FROM THE LOW 90S ALONG THE COAST TO MID 90S OVER
THE INTERIOR WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE LOW TO MID 70S.

SAT-TUE...(PREVIOUS DISCUSSION) CPC INDICATING THE PNA REMAINING IN
A POSITIVE PHASE INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...WEAKENING SOME TOWARD THE
END OF THE FCST PD. THE RESULTING TROFING ACRS THE ERN CONUS WILL
KEEP THE ATLC RIDGE AXIS MEANDERING ACRS THE CNTRL/SRN FL PENINSULA
WITH SWLY FLOW PREVAILING THRU THE COLUMN. WILL KEEP DAILY POPS IN
THE 30-50PCT RANGE THRU THE DAYTIME PDS...BCMG A SLGT CHC THRU LATE
EVNGS. MAX/MIN TEMPS NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABV AVG...BUT NOT BY MORE THAN
5F.

&&

.AVIATION...EXPECT SHRA/TSRA COVERAGE TO INCREASE SLIGHTLY ALONG THE
EAST AND WEST COAST SEA BREEZE BOUNDARIES THROUGH THE AFT. GREATEST
COVERAGE EXPECTED WITH ANY BOUNDARY COLLISIONS TOWARD THE NRN
BREVARD COAST SOUTHWARD THROUGH AREAS WEST OF I-95 INTO LATE AFT AND
EARLY EVE. CONVECTION WILL THEN DECREASE IN COVERAGE WITH RAIN
CHANCES GENERALLY ENDING BY MIDNIGHT.

&&

.MARINE...

TONIGHT...SOUTHERLY WINDS UP TO 10-15 KNOTS WILL BECOME S/SW
OVERNIGHT AND DECREASE SLIGHTLY WITH SEAS RANGING FROM 1-3 FEET. A
FEW OFFSHORE MOVING STORMS WITH GUSTY WINDS WILL STILL BE POSSIBLE
FROM LATE AFT INTO THE EVENING...MAINLY FROM THE CAPE SOUTHWARD TO
INDIAN RIVER/ST. LUCIE COUNTIES.

THU-SUN...(PREVIOUS DISCUSSION) GENERALLY FAVORABLE BOATING
CONDITIONS THRU THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. ATLC RIDGE AXIS WILL MEANDER
OVER THE CNTRL/SRN FL PENINSULA...MAINTAINING A GENTLE TO MODERATE
S/SWRLY BREEZE OVER THE COASTAL WATERS...BCMG S/SE NEAR THE COAST
EACH AFTN WITH THE FORMATION OF THE EAST COAST SEA BREEZE. SEAS
GENERALLY 2-3FT AREAWIDE...OCNLY UP TO 4FT OVER THE OFFSHORE LEG N
OF SEBASTIAN INLET. PRIMARY MARINE THREAT WILL BE TSRAS MVG
OFFSHORE IN THE LATE AFTNS/EARLY EVNGS THAT WILL BE CAPABLE OF
GENERATING SFC WIND GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 35KTS.
