NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service tiyan GU
427 PM chst Monday may 20 2013

Synopsis...
radar shows no showers nearby. Satellite shows a few clouds and
possible light showers just to our east. Farther east...visible
images and ascat analysis show clouds and surface winds associated
with a westward moving trade-wind trough near 15n165e.

&&

Discussion...
no significant changes were made at this time. Models indicate the
trade-wind trough near 165e could arrive about Thursday and cause
some clouds and isolated showers...otherwise a dry trade-wind
pattern dominates the marianas.

&&

Marine...
local buoys show combined seas ranging from 2 to 5 feet across
the area. Refreshed wind grids with latest GFS and wave grids were
adjusted slightly based on ww3 guidance.

&&

Fire weather...
the kbdi will continue to climb this week and winds are expected to
remain below red flag criteria through the next few days.

&&

Eastern micronesia...
showers have remained just east of Majuro all day with very little
westward movement. A few low clouds continue to push toward
Majuro...but west winds above 13kft seem to be keeping showers to
the east. Models follow this trend in keeping showers confined to
the east before tapering off. European model (ecmwf) shows a few more showers
reaching Majuro overnight. Convection remains over Kosrae and very
near Pohnpei. Scattered showers will persist for the night at Kosrae
while Pohnpei sees only isolated showers as heavier showers remain
just to the south. Convection south of Pohnpei will gradually shift
westward over the next couple of days and the region will see
slightly drier conditions the remainder of the week.

&&

Western micronesia...
a small cluster of showers near Chuuk this morning tapered off by
afternoon and satellite imagery shows clearing middle and upper level
clouds nearby. Models show a trade-wind disturbance near Pohnpei and
Kosrae spreading westward to near Chuuk Tuesday though Thursday.
However...the bulk of showers is expected to pass just south and
keep skies mostly cloudy over Chuuk. A weak surface trough east of
Yap and Koror will bring a short round of scattered showers to Yap
this evening until around midnight. For Koror...showers will remain
isolated but light winds Tuesday could allow for island convection
during the day. Beginning Tuesday night...both Yap and Koror will
see dry conditions back in place.

&&

Gum watches/warnings/advisories...
GU...none.
Marianas waters...none.
