Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Blacksburg Virginia
409 am EDT Friday Aug 29 2008

Synopsis...
a weak front will approach from the west tonight...slowly
passing through the region through Saturday night. By Sunday and
into next week...strong high pressure will build down from the
Great Lakes into the southern Appalachians.

&&

Near term /until 6 PM this evening/...
wedge is becoming shallow and axis of surface high pressure is just
west of the Blue Ridge. Models and BUFKIT are showing that low
clouds should erode from southwest to northeast today. Expect that
Bluefield and Lewisburg will become scattered a few hours before
Roanoke and Lynchburg. Of course...amount of clouds will greatly
influence high temperatures. Will stay closer to warmer mav guidance
in the west and south...and only around 80 north of Roanoke and
Lynchburg.

&&

Short term /6 PM this evening through Saturday night/...
fog and stratus may fill back in for most of the area tonight but
will again mix out during the morning on Saturday. Timing of the
front approaching from the Ohio Valley is slower on the 00z guidance
and with little upper support until then will keep chance of rain
low. Even with the front on Saturday best chance of rain will be in
the afternoon with the best heating and instability.

&&

Long term /Sunday through Thursday/...
strong upper high over the Great Lakes will allow heat to build
over parts of the Ohio Valley. Somewhat cooler air will be
reinforced over our region as an easterly component to the wind
persists thanks to a strong surface high over the northeast and
middle Atlantic region. Expect sunny warm days and clear
comfortable nights through much of this period.

&&

Aviation /08z Friday through Tuesday/...
clouds have filled back in where clouds broke...the lyh to Dan
corridor overnight. All terminals should at least experience tempo
IFR ceiling or visible near dawn. With The Wedge departing...and SW winds
developing....kblf and klwb will break out of the low clouds late
morning and early PM. Clouds should break again during the morning
at kdan and in the PM at kroa. Klyh may experience IFR or MVFR
ceilings for the entire day.

With abundant low level moisture remaining...IFR/LIFR visible is possible
at klwb Friday night. Low clouds may also hold on into the night at
klyh...longer than guidance suggests as SW winds really dont
develop there until Saturday. Late in the afternoon Saturday and
into Saturday night...showers will move across the mountains with
the cold front. These showers will eventually move into the east
overnight into Saturday morning. With the exception of Mountain
Valley fog during the overnights...VFR conditions will prevail
Sunday and into the middle of next week.
