Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
824 PM MDT Wednesday Aug 27 2008

Synopsis...a generally dry northwest flow aloft will reside
across the region through the remainder of the week. Moisture is
expected to return northward during the upcoming weekend.

&&

Discussion...cold front has moved south of the state this evening
effectively shutting off any chance for convection. Will update
forecast to remove any mention of thunderstorms this evening. A
dry and stable airmass will remain in place through the County
Warning Area through Friday. A cool northwesterly flow will
continue over the area and keep temperatures near to slightly
below normal tomorrow over northern Utah before the airmass warms
for Friday and Saturday. Next reasonable chance for precipitation
will be Sunday as an upstream system moves onto the Pacific
northwest coast. This system will push a short wave across Utah
which will increase the southwest flow across the state. This will
pull a decent surge of moisture from Arizona into all of the state.

&&

Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail at the slc terminal through
the evening under mostly clear skies. Northwest winds are expected
to shift to the southeast between 03z and 04z.

&&

Fire weather...drier and cooler air has settled into the state
behind a cold front which has moved out of Utah. North to northwest
winds will diminish this evening statewide. Flat upper level ridge
will build over the Great Basin over the next few days keeping the
dry airmass in place. Afternoon minimum relative humidities will
approach critical levels in some locations tomorrow and Friday but
with weakening flow aloft winds will not be strong enough to be a
major concern. Upper level trough will then move onto the West
Coast this weekend. This will allow deep moisture to return north
into the state. This will result in increasing relative humidities
over the weekend as well as increasing chance of precipitation on
Saturday and Sunday. This system is expected to push a strong cold
front into the Great Basin late in the weekend and gusty south
winds are expected across Utah ahead of this front.
