NWS Forecaster Discussion
235 fxus65 kslc 212126 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 326 PM MDT Thursday Aug 21 2008 Synopsis...a cold front will move through northern Utah this evening providing a day of cooler temperatures on Friday. High pressure ridge will build over the area on Saturday with high temperatures rebounding accordingly. Little in the way of dynamics to support precipitation through early next week. && Discussion...a cold front is sinking southward across southern Idaho this afternoon. Only a few sprouts of cumulus are developing over higher terrain near the boundary indicating that there is not much moisture is associated with this feature. Therefore mostly clear skies with a light northerly breeze will prevail overnight in the cooler air mass. The front will make it about halfway through the state before running out of gas by early morning. Tomorrows temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler across the north with less of a change in the southern half of the forecast area. Will see a bit more afternoon cloud development tomorrow across the north but little if any precipitation. The upper level ridge begins to build back in on Saturday and this should promote isolated thunderstorms over the mountains. The activity is expected to be slightly more widespread on Sunday...but in neither case does it look very promising for rainfall so have kept chance of precipitation low. Weather gets more interesting early next week as another significant piece of energy crosses the northern rockies. Models struggling to agree on a solution with this system...but it appears like it will push a stronger cold front than tonights version through northern Utah on Tuesday night or Wednesday. At this point it looks like another dry front if it does materialize. && Aviation...VFR conditions will continue through the evening at the slc terminal. Winds may stay westerly longer than usual in the 21z to 23z time frame...before turning more to the north through the evening. Southeasterly drainage winds may occur at times between 09z and 14z...but these winds will likely be lighter than usual...and there is a 40 percent chance that winds will stay from the north through the entire night. && Fire weather...a dry cold front will continue to move through northern Utah late this afternoon into this evening. Gusty south winds will continue this afternoon ahead of the cold front across the area. As the cold front passes through the northern portion of fire weather zone 420 this afternoon and early evening...winds will shift to the northwest and humidities will increase. Across the remainder of the warned area...southerly winds and low humidities will continue to create severe fire weather conditions into the evening. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories... Utah...red flag warning until 9 PM Thursday for fire weather zones 420...423...434 and 435. Wyoming...none. && $$ Public...Pomeroy fire weather...Kruse aviation...schoening For more information from National oceanic and atmospheric administration/S National Weather Service visit... http://weather.Gov/saltlakecity (all lower case)
