NWS Forecaster Discussion
860 fxus65 kslc 061550 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 950 am MDT Monday Oct 6 2008 Synopsis...high pressure will build over the area today through Tuesday. Next cold system dropping south out of western Canada will move into the eastern Great Basin through the latter part of the week and remain through the weekend. && Discussion...short lived upper ridge is building into the west today and will remain into Wednesday morning. Precipitation has abated for the most part and all that remains are a few low clouds which should also be gone by afternoon. A band of clouds on infrared satellite across southern Idaho is moving southeast in the mean west northwesterly flow aloft. These clouds should also dissipate before getting to Utah as they hit the drier sinking air under the ridge. Temperatures should rebound back to near normal values by Tuesday. No updates needed this morning. Pretty quiet couple of days as we await the next upstream system. This system appears much colder than the past weekend but models disagree in timing and location at this time. && Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail throughout the day at the slc terminal. Southeast winds are expected to shift to the northwest between 16z and 17z and remain through middle evening. && Fire weather...a strong inversion will prevail across the region through Wednesday. While transport winds are moderately strong over southern Utah under this inversion this morning winds will be decreasing this afternoon. The clearing index is not expected to improve until Wednesday afternoon over the western valleys and not until Thursday over the rest of the area. A dry cold front will be the reason for this improvement on Thursday. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories... Utah...none. Wyoming...none. && $$ Public/aviation...Young fire weather......struthwolf For more information from National oceanic and atmospheric administration/S National Weather Service visit... http://weather.Gov/saltlakecity (all lower case)
