Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA
133 PM EDT sun Sep 7 2008

Synopsis...

A high pressure ridge will be in place for Monday...with a cold
front crossing Monday night into Tuesday. Another high will build
in for Wednesday.

&&

Near term /through tonight/...

Shortwave energy will move east of the region early this
evening...with clouds dissipating. High pressure builds in
overnight...with temperatures falling off into the upper 40s to
lower 50s.

&&

Short term /Monday through Wednesday/...

The high pressure ridge will keep clouds at Bay for much of the
day Monday...but upper to middle level clouds will begin to advect
in during the afternoon ahead of the advancing low. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms will develop in advance of the cold
front Monday night...with a chance for storms across entire County Warning Area by
Tuesday morning. The front should be east of the area by Monday
evening...with precipitation chances diminishing. High pressure will then
build in for Wednesday.

&&

Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/...
surface high pressure under generally flat flow aloft will bring
dry and seasonal conditions Wednesday and Thursday. Return flow on
backside of surface high will increase moisture for the second
half of the week. This combined with multiple shortwaves in zonal
flow will bring a chance for showers Thursday night through the
weekend. Temperatures throughout the long term period will be near
seasonal averages.

&&

Aviation /17z Sunday through Thursday/...
a crossing short wave will continue to support extensive middle
level cloudiness today with isolated light showers. Generally VFR
conditions may be expected with southwest to west wind at
approximately 10 kts.

VFR conditions are expected through Monday under building high
pressure. The next cold front is projected across the upper Ohio
Valley on Tuesday with scattered showers and possibly some
thunderstorms in accompaniment. VFR conditions should prevail in the
wake of the front during midweek.
