Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
248 am EDT Monday Sep 8 2008

Synopsis...
low pressure will develop over the Ohio Valley later
today...before moving up the Saint Lawrence River valley tonight
and Tuesday. High pressure over the Great Lakes will build over
New England for the rest of the work week. Low pressure will pass
west of New England next weekend.

&&

Near term /through today/...
relatively quiet for a change. After some patchy morning
fog...mainly in the Connecticut River valley...it will be drier
with lower dew points over the region. A weak impulse will move
through Quebec province...bringing just a slight chance of a
shower to northern portions today. Mav guidance accepted.

Hyrdo...rivers remains high...but continue to slowly subside early
this morning.

&&

Short term /tonight/...
there will be more in the way of cloudiness tonight due to low
pressure and associated cyclogenesis over the Saint Lawrence River
valley. Wind fields will be strengthening ahead of this developing
system which will set the stage for possible localized strong to
severe thunderstorms on Tuesday.

&&

Long term /Tuesday through Sunday/...
a strong cold front will approach the region Tuesday with the
frontal passage to occur late Tuesday or Tuesday evening. Thunderstorms
are expected to develop ahead of the front with some having
potentially strong winds since a strong wind field develops during
the afternoon and evening. Behind the front late Tuesday night and Wednesday a
strong ridge of high pressure builds into the area and becomes anchored
over the area through Thursday...very dry conditions and cold overnight
temperatures expected under this high pressure sytem. By Friday a fast moving
upper level short wave trough with an associated surface low will move
across the eastern Great Lakes Friday and then through the St Lawrence Friday
night and Sat. Models bring a good soaking rain with this system.
Stayed cose to guidance for temperature forecast.

&&

Aviation /07z Monday through Friday/...
short term...mainly VFR conditions across the region...with
localized IFR/LIFR for a brief period in a few valley locations
through early this morning.
Long term...conditions should become MVFR and IFR Tuesday afternoon into
the evening in advance of a strong cold front...behind the front
conditions should rapidly become VFR and continue VFR through the
rest of the week.

&&

Marine...
short term...large swells produced by the remains of Hanna will
gradually be subsiding today. Small craft advisories (for seas)
will likely be lowered in a few hours.

Long term...an increasing southerly wind flow is expected in
advance of a strong cold front and conditions may reach Small Craft Advisory levels
in the afternoon and into the evening. High pressure will settle over the
area for middle to late week with winds/seas to be light.
&&

Gyx watches/warnings/advisories...
ME...none.
New Hampshire...none.
Marine...Small Craft Advisory until 5 am EDT early this morning for
anz150>154.
