Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Omaha/valley NE
300 am CDT Thursday Aug 28 2008

Discussion...
weak stalled out cold front lingering across the County Warning Area this morning
from southeast Minnesota into northeast Nebraska. Elevated
convection had developed on the northeast fringe of the County Warning Area prior
to midnight in an area of good 850-700 warm advection and on nose of
low level jet. Primary track of storms has been eastward with most
recent satellite showing little in the way of forcing upstream.
00z models indicate this trend with best quantitative precipitation forecast east of the area today.
Will continue to carry some low probability of precipitation for southeast portions of the
County Warning Area today as front pushes slowly through the remainder of the area.
Little change to the short term forecast with warmer temperatures returning
over the weekend as next Lee trough develops in advance of fairly
strong upper wave coming into the western Continental U.S..

No change to the extended period with 00z models still showing
series of waves moving into the west and lifting across the northern
plains for some chance probability of precipitation around Tuesday and again late in the
week.

Aviation...
for taf sites koma/klnk/kofk through 12z Friday.

Cold front will slowly drift southeast across eastern Nebraska
through 18z. Scattered thunderstorms possible in the kofk area
through 14z Thursday along the front...with koma and klnk seeing a
small chance for storms between 10z and 18z. Band of MVFR ceilings
around fl025 will lag front through 15z...mainly affecting kofk.
Improving conditions at all taf sites through morning...with VFR
conditions expected after 18z. VFR weather expected through 12z
Friday...however areas of MVFR/IFR fog will likely develop after 06z
in eastern Nebraska...and may affect taf sites with visibilities below 2sm
at times.
