NWS Forecaster Discussion
581 fxus65 kmso 272320 aaa afdmso Area forecast discussion...updated National Weather Service Missoula Montana 520 PM MDT Wednesday Aug 27 2008 Update...canceled the lake Wind Advisory for Flathead Lake. && Discussion...as the upper level jet moves off to the east...winds have begun to diminish across the Flathead Lake area. As a result the advisory has been canceled, however...winds may still occasionally gust up to 25 miles per hour through this evening. The High Wind Warning still remains in effect until 900 PM MDT tonight for elevations above 6500 feet in Glacier National Park including Logan Pass. Gusts as high as 77 miles per hour have recently been reported at Logan Pass...so no changes have been made to the High Wind Warning at this time. && Aviation...the dynamics associated with an upper level jet will keep low and middle level clouds with a few embedded showers going throughout the night...especially in northwest Montana. The cloud cover will obscure mountain tops and passes at times. The gusty westerly winds should diminish tonight as the jet gets pushed northward into Canada. && Previous discussion... /issued 217 PM MDT Wednesday Aug 27 2008/ Discussion...a strong upper level jet continues to stream across the northern rockies this afternoon and evening. The dynamics associated with the jet will keep a few showers in northwest Montana especially along the Continental Divide. Gusty westerly winds will persist across the region with a few locations like Logan Pass gusting to 60 miles per hour. A ridge of high pressure will build back over the northern rockies Thursday into Friday causing the jet to be pushed up into Canadian. Clouds will persist across northwest Montana...but shower activity will be minimal. Temperatures should gradually warm to near normal readings by Friday. Friday night through Monday will be a transition period over the inter mountain west. Models are in decent agreement with the ridge beginning to break down Saturday as an impressive upper level trough moves onshore. There are some timing differences...but the general theme is increasing clouds and winds Saturday afternoon with a cold trough digging over the Pacific northwest. This trough will dig to the south and move over the Idaho/Nevada border Sunday night. This location will mean southwest Montana will finally see some precipitation while northwest Montana will see lesser amounts. The other big news will be below normal highs for Sunday and well below normal on Monday as the trough moves through. This system will finally move east Monday night as a transitory weak shortwave ridge builds over north central Idaho and western Montana. This will quickly be replaced by another shortwave trough on Wednesday...but at this time...northwest Montana looks most affected. && Mso watches/warnings/advisories...
