Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service New Orleans la
355 PM CDT Wednesday Aug 27 2008

Short term...
latest surface analysis continue to show the remnant low of Fay
over east Tennessee and a very weak pressure gradient over the
lower Mississippi Valley. A swath of precipitable water values greater
than 2 inches from Houston to the Mississippi Delta to
Apalachicola was noted. Surface land heating near the swath has
yielded isolated storms south of Lake Pontchartrain. A weak trough
axis from Ohio the north Gulf has produced a weak northwest flow
over Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition...subsidence will
likely suppress rain chances from reaching norms. With heating and
residual moisture in place...will maintain slight chance of rain
Thursday and Friday.

Long term...
a developing ridge over The Rockies will extend over the middle
south Friday into Saturday. Flow aloft will shift from west to
northeast and east...well ahead of Gustav. Continental flow will
decrease the rain chances below norm... but will keep a slight
chance to low chances of rain over the weekend. It has been a
chore discerning the different tracks for Gustav. Please refer to
Tropical Storm Gustav discussion (tcdat2) for more information. We
introduced higher rain chances for Labor Day and Tuesday with the
last package. Now...we have introduced higher winds across land
forecast area and high precipitation totals associated with Gustav. In
addition...we have lowered day time temperatures for this time. Will
maintain near norm temperatures and rain chances next Wednesday into
Thursday.

Aviation...
isolated thunderstorms should remain far enough away from msy this
afternoon...therefore no thunderstorms and rain in the tafs. Patchy light fog is
possible at msy...btr...gpt...btr.

&&

Marine...
the main concern is Gustav. Currently Gustav is forecast to move to
near the mouth of the Mississippi River on Monday. Thus we will be
including hurricane conditions possible in the forecast.
