Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service tiyan GU
515 am chst Tuesday Jan 6 2009

Synopsis...satellite and radar show strong showers moving through
the southern portion of Guam coastal waters with isolated shower
activity embedded in northeast trade wind flow across the islands.
Low cloud cover is breaking up as shear line south of the marianas
becomes more diffuse.
&&

Discussion...left previous forecast pretty much intact except for
trimming back extent of clouds and showers today and tonight. By
all accounts remnant shear line showers should remain well south
and west of Guam the next couple of days keeping isolated coverage
as prevailing weather. Models maintain a fairly benign dry pattern
through Friday with no significant transitory features readily
apparent. GFS and European model (ecmwf) still keep next shear line approach close
this weekend but lacking cold air push to drive it further south.
&&

Marine...marine conditions will continue to gradually improve.
Cancelled Small Craft Advisory for hazard seas earlier this morning.
Expect to be able to drop hazard surf and high rip risk Wednesday.
&&

Eastern micronesia...left previous forecast intact. GFS continues
to show a disturbance moving through the region later in the week.
May have to bump forecast up to scattered wording in next update
or two if model output continues to be aggressive with this system.
Pohnpei...Kosrae and Majuro will remain under high surf advisories
with long period northerly swells through at least middle- week.
&&

Western micronesia...stubborn low-level troughing continues to
trigger isolated shower and thunderstorm activity in the vicinity
of Yap and Koror...so have reluctantly kept mostly cloudy wording
in the forecast today. Otherwise...the region will remain largely
under influence of dry trade regime. Kept high surf advisories
for Koror...Yap and Chuuk as long period northerly swells generate
hazardous surf along north and west shores through midweek.
&&

Gum watches/warnings/advisories...
GU...high surf advisory until 6 PM chst Wednesday for guz001>004.

Marianas waters...none.
