... Record warm weather in Portland Maine on Thursday...

The high temperature on Thursday was 73 degrees at the Portland
jetport. Though very warm, this was six degrees short of the record
79 degrees set in 1942 and 1943. The low temperature on Thursday was
53 degrees... again very warm but not a record. The record warmest
low temperature remains 56 degrees which was set in 1949.

However... the average temperature for yesterday was a record for
October 9th. The average temperature of 63 degrees is the warmest
for the date... surpassing the previous record of 62 degrees set in
1942 and in 1970.

Temperature records at the Portland jetport began in November 1940.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
234 PM EDT Friday Oct 10 2008

Synopsis...
high pressure will remain over the region through Sunday. A back
door cold front will move through northern New England early
Monday and move back to the north as a warm front Tuesday. A cold
front will move through the northeast Wednesday afternoon.

&&

Near term /through tonight/...
mainly clear tonight...except for some early evening cumulus in the
western mountains of Maine. There may be some cirrus moving in
over the top of the ridge later tonight...so have added clouds to
the grids towards morning which will allow for partly cloudy skies.

Have added patchy fog to the Connecticut River valley. A few
isolated...sheltered spots in Maine will have patchy fog as
well...but not widespread enough to mention in the products.

Used blend of mav/met MOS for minimum temperatures. Expect
temperatures near freezing in the mountains.

&&

Short term /Saturday/...
high level moisture may continue to spill over the upper level ridge
on Saturday. However...much of this cloud cover will be thin...so
expect partly to mostly sunny conditions to rule the day.

Steep lapse rates may allow for scattered cumulus development in the
higher terrain.

Most areas will top out in the middle 60s...except the higher terrain
and eastern sections will be a couple degrees cooler.
&&

Long term /Saturday night through Friday/...
a fairly quite period with 500 mb high centered over the southeast. A couple
of chances for some light shower activity. Surface high pressure will
remain in control through Sunday. Models are hinting at a back
door cold frontal passage early Monday morning with a few showers.
Front will move back north Tuesday ushering in some milder air
again ahead of the next cold frontal passage on Wednesday.

&&

Aviation /18z Friday through Wednesday/...
short term...VFR over the taf sites. May be some patchy late night
fog in the Connecticut River valley.

Long term...VFR conditions Sat night. May be some patchy IFR in fog
at the usual locations. VFR sun. Front approaches Sun night lowering
conditions to MVFR due mainly to ceilings. Monday MVFR early
increasing to VFR. VFR Monday night some isolated IFR in fog possible. VFR Tuesday.
Wednesday VFR lwring to MVFR in ceilings as cold front approaches.

&&

Marine...
short term...winds/seas will remain below Small Craft Advisory criteria.

Long term... no flags expected through Wednesday.

&&

Gyx watches/warnings/advisories...
ME...none.
New Hampshire...none.
Marine...none.
