NWS Forecaster Discussion
900 fxus61 kgyx 291855 afdgyx Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 255 PM EDT Friday Aug 29 2008 Synopsis... a weak trough will move through the region this afternoon and tonight causing a few widely scattered showers. Saturday a cold front will move off the coast by early evening sparking some scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two. High pressure will build over the region Sunday through Thursday. A cold front will approach the area Friday. && Near term /through tonight/...cloud cover will be the forecast problem tonight. We are sandwiched between two systems. Weak ridging through western Maine and New Hampshire has helped to keep the clouds to the west at Bay as well as clouds associated with surface low south of Nova Scotia. Believe the overall trend will be for clouds to increase from the west as cold front slowly approaches. Some showers have fired ahead of some more humid air. These should die out soon after sunset and remain widely scattered. Will forecast some patchy fog tonight as any breaks in the overcast will allow for cooling tonight. Used mavs as guidance for temperatures tonight. && Short term /Saturday/... for Sat day cold front nears the forecast area late morning and passes offshore Sat evening. We will be unstable enough to produce scattered showers and a thunderstorm or two. Front will move offshore by early evening. && Long term /Saturday night through Friday/... just a chance of lingering showers....mainly in middle coast sections Saturday evening then looking for clearing downwind of the mountains. Upper trough swinging through the region will keep variable clouds in the mountains. High pressure builds into the region from the west on Sunday. Expect some cloudiness to bubble up with daytime heating as upper slowly shifts eastward with mostly cloudy skies persisting in the mountains. Weather remains quiet through midweek as high pressure remains nearly stationary to the west of the region. Warmer air riding over ridge begins to flood into the region on Monday with temperatures rising to above normal levels Tuesday and Wednesday. Warmest locations likely to see readings in the middle to upper 80s. Cold front approaches the region from the west on Thursday. Pre- frontal trough may kick off some showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon but only going with slight chance probability of precipitation at this point in time as there will likely be some differences in timing of this feature in the next several days. Cold front prognosticated to cross the region Thursday night and push offshore by Friday morning followed by more high pressure. && Aviation /18z Friday through Wednesday/... short term...expect mostly VFR this afternoon and early evening. Patchy IFR/LIFR possible after 02z in fog and stratus. For Sat any fog stratus lifts/Burns off resulting in VFR. Expect scattered MVFR during afternoon in showers and possible -tsra. Long term...generally VFR Saturday night through Wednesday with the usual morning fog in River Valley locations. && Marine... quite on the waters tonight and Saturday. Winds should come around to SW later tonight. Long term...winds and seas remain below Small Craft Advisory levels. && Gyx watches/warnings/advisories... ME...none. New Hampshire...none. Marine...none. && $$
