NWS Forecaster Discussion
638 fxus61 kcar 291929 afdcar Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 329 PM EDT Friday Aug 29 2008 Synopsis... low pressure system east of Nova Scotia is bringing cloud cover to much of the area today. This system will move northeastward this evening. A weak ridge of high pressure will dominate weather tonight before a cold front moves in on Saturday bringing showers to the area. High pressure builds back in on Sunday and persists through the week. && Near term /until 6 am Saturday morning/... retrograding low pressure system off the Maine coast is still generating cloud cover and shower activity along the Maine/New Brunswick border. All the while...a cold front approaches from the west. These two weather systems will play a large part in the weather over Maine in the next 24 hours. Overnight...the offshore low pressure system will cease retrograde motion and begin to lift northeast and out of the area. A brief pause in shower activity for areas mentioned above will result. Nevertheless...residual cloud cover from exiting low pressure and approaching front will keep conditions cloudy. Temperatures are expected to remain elevated overnight as a result. Gmos temperatures were adjusted upward to account for this. Otherwise...a quiet night is in store. && Short term /6 am Saturday morning through Saturday night/... a cold front approaches from west Saturday afternoon. Precipitation will spread across the state Saturday afternoon and evening. The front will leave the southeastern corner of Maine by late Saturday night. Precipitation will generally amount to no more than a few tenths of inch from this system. && Long term /Sunday through Friday/... a cold upper trough digs into New Brunswick Sunday morning and develops into a cutoff low during Sunday. The resulting instability may cause some showers or an isolated thunderstorm across the far northern and eastern regions. High pressure rapidly builds into Maine during Monday and persists into late Thursday or later. GFS suggests a very weak front may cross into the region Thursday night but prefer the European model (ecmwf) solution of keeping any frontal boundaries north of the state through the end of the period. && Aviation /19z Friday through Wednesday/... MVFR conditions prevail across all terminals in the County Warning Area this evening as a low pressure system off the coast begins to exit the area. Although a brief period VFR conditions are expected overnight...conditions will again become MVFR/IFR on Saturday as cold front approaches the area. Showers also can be expected. High pressure returns to the area late Sunday and persists through the week. VFR expected. && Marine... near term: winds/seas remain well below small craft criteria. Visibilities can be reduced in early morning hours tomorrow. Short term: winds/seas continue to remain below small craft criteria. Visibilities can be reduced with showers associated with frontal passage late Saturday && Car watches/warnings/advisories... ME...none. Marine...none. && $$ Near term...lericos short term...mwalker long term...mwalker aviation...lericos marine...lericos/mwalker
