Flash Flood Watch  Statement as of 10:19 PM CST on January 5, 2009

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Tuesday
afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Shreveport continues the Flash
Flood Watch for

* portions of north central Louisiana and northwest Louisiana...
including the following areas... in north central Louisiana...
Caldwell... Grant... Jackson... La Salle... Lincoln... Ouachita...
Union la and Winn. In northwest Louisiana... Natchitoches and
Sabine la.

* Through Tuesday afternoon

* a series of upper level disturbances will combine with
increasing Gulf moisture along the low level jet across
southeast Texas and north central Louisiana... to yield
widespread areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over
portions of deep East Texas... all of north Louisiana... and
south central Arkansas. These areas of rain and embedded
thunderstorms will yield locally heavy rainfall at times...
over areas that have received at least a half inch of rain
today over already saturated grounds.

* Additional rainfall amounts between 2 and 4 inches will be
possible tonight through Tuesday afternoon... which may result
in flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued. Turn around... dont drown.

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Shreveport la
1003 PM CST Monday Jan 5 2009

Discussion...

Have made minor temperature adjustments across the four state
region this evening for the lows overnight by lowering just about
every site by one or two degrees. This still keeps all locations
above freezing...however there may be very brief mix of rain and sleet
but depth of warmer air aloft over top of colder dome of air will
kept those to a minimum. Disturbances aloft in the southwest flow
still look to fill in the lack of rain over the southwest sections
of the four state region. Adjustments to the gridded data have
been made to match changes to temperatures and dew points. /06/

Aviation...

A stationary surface front extends from hattisburg Mississippi to
Lafayette Louisiana. North of the front...widespread -ra showers
have continued throughout most of the day and into the evening
hours. Overrunning warm moist air associated with the subtropical
jet stream flowing over a surface cold pool is the primary mechanism
for this wet pattern. At this time...all terminal locations are
reporting IFR conditions due to low ceilings. Conditions are not
expected to improve over the next 12 hours. In fact...as the night
progresses...cold air...significant ground moisture... and light
winds may allow for reduced visibilities down to a mile in most
locations. By 18z...conditions will improve from west to east as an
upper-level disturbance moves across the region. Rain should end by
00z Wednesday. Afterwords...ceilings will gradually improve.
