NWS Forecaster Discussion
958 fxus65 kpih 281954 afdpih Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho 155 PM MDT Thursday Aug 28 2008 Discussion...the broad ridge over the Pacific northwest coast today will move to the east of the forecast area on Friday. SW flow aloft will dominate as a new upper trough digs into the Pacific northwest on Saturday. Warm temperatures will continue through Sat...with a slight chance of thunderstorms over the cen mountains Sat afternoon/evening as the first of the Pacific moisture moves into that area. The upper trough digs itself into a major system by Sunday morning... still located over the Pacific northwest. Showers are expected to spread into all mountain areas by Sun morning...with a few thunderstorms possible in the southern Highlands. A surface low deepens over the Great Basin on Sunday ..along with strong upward vertical velocity fields ahead of the deepening upper trough. This should result in precipitation becoming more widespread by sun evening...with the most in the southeast Highlands. The surface low stretches out and moves into Wyoming by Monday morning. Precipitation is still widespread in the eastern Highlands...with showers wrapping around the upper low back into western Idaho. Limited precipitation coverage is expected in the Snake River Plain during this event. Showers finally taper off late Monday night. Temperatures cool drastically from Saturday to Monday...about 20 degrees. This may result in snow levels down to around 7500 feet on Monday. Dry northwest flow sets up by Tuesday and continues through the end of the week...with gradually warming temperatures. Hedges && Aviation...expect VFR conditions through Friday as dry westerly flow aloft continues to provide uneventful weather over the taf sites. Gk && Fire weather...the flat upper ridge will continue to dominate weather through Friday with mainly light diurnal wind variations and no precipitation. An upper level trough will approach the West Coast Friday and a cold front will slide east into the district. Expect a wind increase Saturday with this feature and red flag conditions may be a possibility especially in the northern districts with low humidities Saturday afternoon. As the upper level trough pushes east expect much cooler and wetter conditions Sunday and Monday as humidities increase substantially. && Pih watches/warnings/advisories... none. && $$
