NWS Forecaster Discussion
531 fxhw60 phfo 071403 afdhfo Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 400 am HST sun Sep 7 2008 Synopsis... light to moderate trade winds will diminish from Monday Onward. The stable atmosphere over the islands will limit windward rainfall... but Lee areas may experience increased clouds and a few showers. && Discussion... overnight trade showers brought light rainfall amounts to mainly windward and Mauka locations. Kauai appeared to get the most shower activity...but even there most gages only reported between .05 and 15 of an inch. The ridge north of the state will remain in place today and Monday. Light to moderate trades with scattered windward and mountain showers are in the forecast for the period. On Tuesday and Wednesday the ridge weakens and pulls north which weakens the gradient at our latitude. The resulting light trades on Tuesday will battle with the seabreeze for a hot and humid day in metropolitan Honolulu. The trades appear to weaken further on Wednesday for well developed daytime seabreezes on Wednesday. Upper level ridging and subsidence is expected to keep any showers on the light side through midweek. For the end of next week...the models have backed off on bringing moisture up from the southeast and now maintain a due easterly flow across the state. The forecast pop and quantitative precipitation forecast reflects a persistence forecast of slightly below climatology through the end of the week. && Marine... the large south swell will lower slowly today...but will remain at or above high surf advisory heights. Therefore...a high surf advisory for south-facing shores will remain in effect through today. A new south southeast swell will arrive tonight and Monday. This is expected to bring near advisory level surf to south shores on Monday and Tuesday. Will wait to see daytime observation and buoy data requires an extension of the advisory. && Hfo watches/warnings/advisories... high surf advisory until 6 PM HST today for south facing shores. && $$ Brenchley
