NWS Forecaster Discussion
867 fxhw60 phfo 080606 afdhfo Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 800 PM HST sun Sep 7 2008 Synopsis... light to moderate trade winds will diminish from Tuesday through the week. The stable atmosphere over the islands will limit windward rainfall...but Lee areas may experience increased clouds and a few showers. && Discussion... typical trade wind weather continues across the state this evening. The subtropical ridge is slowly lifting north to near 30n with a weak upper low just east of the islands. Scattered showers have continued to hit windward locations with isolated showers travelling over to the leeward sides. Rainfall amounts have been light with these passing showers...the biggest totals this afternoon and evening have been across windward Maui with 0.50 of an inch at Puu Kukui and 0.12 of an inch at Hana. Rainfall has increased at Hilo with over one-third of an inch in the past hour. Elsewhere spotty totals of a few hundredths of an inch have fallen. The subtropical ridge to the north of the state weakens on Tuesday and Wednesday. This results in lighter trades Tuesday and Wednesday. GFS and ec shows that the trades will be at their lightest on Wednesday...allowing sea breezes to set up. Afternoon showers will develop in interior sections...but enough northeast transport flow will remain to push the clouds and showers from interior sections to leeward sections. Still appears that the atmosphere will be stable with marine inversions below 700 mb keeping the showers light. The trades remain light through the end of the week as the subtropical ridge north of the state stays weak. && Marine... the south swell and a new south southeast swell are combining to keep surf at or above advisory levels. These swells will diminish slowly after Tuesday. && Hfo watches/warnings/advisories... high surf advisory until 6 PM HST Tuesday for south facing shores. && $$ Brenchley
