NWS Forecaster Discussion
354 fxus62 kffc 080735 afdffc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia 335 am EDT Monday Sep 8 2008 Short term /today through Wednesday/... latest analysis shows the western periphery of a middle and upper level ridge nosing in over the southeast states...while a weak surface trough extended up from the NE Gulf into central Georgia. Model guidance suggests the upper ridge begins to weaken today as a long wave trough deepens over the middle and upper MS valley. Suspect the surface trough will meander slightly westward...but could still be a focus for isolated thunderstorms later this afternoon during maximum heating. This would indicate the greater chance of storms would be generally west of a Macon to Athens line... but with much uncertainty... will show slight chance probability of precipitation all zones this afternoon. Rain chances increase into middle week as a frontal boundary pushes into the lower Tennessee Valley on Tuesday and Hurricane Ike pushes into the southeast Gulf by early Wednesday. The combination of increasing tropical moisture from the southeast...weak disturbances in the upper levels and moderate instabilities of 1500 convective available potential energy and -4 lifted indice's will warrant a chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Main threat from these storms would be cloud to ground lightning. Otherwise...did not stray far from persistence for today's highs and tonight's lows...then stayed close to the mav numbers for the remainder of the periods. Long term /Wednesday night through Sunday/... a chance of showers and thunderstorms will persist through the end of the week... and most likely into the weekend as Hurricane Ike is expected to push into the northwest Gulf by Friday...with deep tropical moisture advecting inland across the southeast. The GFS also shows another frontal boundary pushing into the Tennessee Valley over the weekend with a deep tropical southerly flow south of the front. Mex guidance shows scattered probability of precipitation through the extended and see no reason to stray from this. All interest are strongly advised to monitor the latest forecasts of Ike from the NHC through the week. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
