NWS Forecaster Discussion
337 fxus62 kffc 212303 afdffc Area forecast discussion...updated National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia 655 PM EDT Thursday Aug 21 2008 Short term /tonight through Saturday night/... GFS/NAM/sref in general agreement through the short term and are just a little faster than tpc's track of Fay which has the center moving west across North Florida and along the coast of the Florida Panhandle and then eventually into Mississippi. The ridge of high pressure nosing into north Georgia appears to be strong enough to keep Fay from moving into the County Warning Area. However the County Warning Area will not escape its effects as we will be caught between the ridge and Fay which is creating a strong pressure gradient. This will keep a strong and moist easterly flow over the County Warning Area through the short term. The best chances of rain from Fay will be along the southern part of the County Warning Area through Saturday. It appears the only chance of rain in the northern part of the County Warning Area is during the day and a spiral band moves off the coast and rotates through the County Warning Area...however on Friday there could be some drizzle during the morning hours with the low clouds. With that in mind will need to keep a chance of rain over the County Warning Area during the day...mainly afternoon...and across the southern part of the County Warning Area at night as the precipitation shield pulls toward the center of Fay. Dewpoint will remain warm as we will have a tropical atmosphere over the County Warning Area which will mean warm overnight lows. Expect mostly cloudy skies due to the proximity of Fay...whether it be low level clouds or cirrus blow off from Fay. This will keep daytime highs in the 70s and 80s. Long term /Sunday through Thursday/... long term heavily dependent on the future path of Fay. Models still not in agreement of Fay after the weekend. For that reason will not change the long term at this time in order to keep consistency. && Aviation...Fay starting to move slowly west...with center expected to stay near the Florida Panhandle. Ceilings will be lowering to MVFR before midnight and remaining there into Friday morning. Showers/thunderstorms should stay along and south of Columbus to Macon overnight...with some drizzle or showers north of that. Winds remaining easterly 15 to 20kt overnight...gusting to 20 to 30kt after sunrise. Visibility generally unrestricted except in showers or thunderstorms. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
