NWS Forecaster Discussion
742 fxus65 kgjt 280921 afdgjt Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado 321 am MDT Thursday Aug 28 2008 Short term...today through Friday night... dry west to northwest flow has settled over the forecast area this morning and will remain in place through Friday. Fairly quiet day expected with only a few high based cumulus expected over the higher terrain. Still have a sliver of moisture over the San Juans and an isolated late afternoon storm still possible. By Friday...a minor surge of moisture works into the San Juans to provide a few more storms...with some activity drifting across La Plata and Archuleta counties by late in the day. The remainder of the forecast area will stay on the dry side. Little change in temperatures through Friday night... with above normal readings continuing. More exciting weather arrives over the weekend. Long term...Saturday through Wednesday... main challenge this period is precipitation as a Pacific trough works into the Great Basin over the weekend. Models agreement has improved with trough having decent amplitude...and even shown to close off 500 mb low for a time over the northern Great Basin. Flow ahead of it allow for a good surge of subtropical moisture. Good dynamics and improving shear as a shortwave is forecast to lift across NE Utah/northwest Colorado Sun night and Monday. This could produce some some strong storms and heavy rainfall. Continued the trend set by the previous forecast shift and boosted probability of precipitation again for the Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon period. Also raised dewpoints for sun-Mon. Drier weather expected Tuesday and Wednesday in the wake of this trough. && Aviation... VFR conditions expected over the entire forecast area through 18z Friday. An isolated thunderstorm is possible over the San Juan Mountains between 19z and 03z today and this evening...with gusty winds to 40 miles per hour and brief heavy rain. Any storms that do form will be short-lived. && Gjt watches/warnings/advisories... Colorado...none. Utah...none. $$ Short term.....Jdc long term......jad aviation.......jdc
