NWS Forecaster Discussion
592 fxus66 keka 212310 cca afdeka Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Eureka California 347 PM PDT Thursday Aug 21 2008 Synopsis...high pressure building into the region will bring drier and cooler conditions to the area tonight. Temperatures will begin to rebound over the weekend before another front moves through early next week. && Short term....tonight through Sunday...current visible satellite imagery shows skies have cleared over a majority of the area as the eastern Pacific high gradually works its way back into the region. The only exception at this time are some lingering clouds over portions of Humboldt and del norte counties. Coastal locations are Crystal clear and the marine layer is well offshore. Tonights expectations are for slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidities inland. The marine layer will likely reform...though later than usual since it is so clear out right now. A ridge will start to build to our east on Friday...but temperatures will remain about the same as they were today. The ridge will strengthen on Saturday which will lead to a warm up into the 90s for inland locations. Sunday will be much of the same. Another front looks like it will move through Sunday night into Monday...bringing the chance of rain and cooler temperatures. MS Long term...Sunday night through Thursday...models remain in good agreement depicting a weak trough moving into Pacific northwest Monday. Although most energy from this system will remain north will mention schc rain/dz for the Redwood coast and north coast interior. Temperatures will moderate by early next week as heights lower across the Pacific northwest in response to the passing trough. Models solutions continue to diverge significantly by the middle of the week with GFS showing a mean trough over the Pacific northwest. Meanwhile...the European model (ecmwf) maintains a more zonal flow across the eastern Pacific. Ensemble mean and Canadian trend more towards European model (ecmwf) so will continue to trend towards it. British Columbia && Aviation...weak subsidence behind the cold frontal passage this morning in addition to increasing northwesterly winds has cleared out the clouds from the immediate coast and banked them up against the immediate coastal hills. Visible satellite shows an extensive bank of low clouds that have been sitting offshore throughout the day. Expect this bank to gradually reach coastal locations later this evening. This will be in addition to locally developing LIFR ceilings/visibilities once winds decouple later tonight. Expect a return to a more typical summertime pattern on Friday with morning low clouds and fog and partial clearing in the afternoon. Inland locations will see MVFR stratocu on ridgetops abating as the sun sets. These areas will also see the development of valley LIFR fog during the overnight hours. Alm && Marine...all area buoys are reporting advisory level seas this afternoon with buoy #22 the highest at 11-12ft. Periods remain relatively long at 12 to 13 seconds for most locations. Expect to see these sea heights continue through the overnight hours and gradually subside Friday morning below advisory levels. As the swell begins to subside...northerly winds are expected to increase to advisory levels over the offshore waters late tonight. This will lead to a continuation of advisory conditions in the offshore waters as the sea state becomes more turbulent with wind waves and short period fresh swell. Winds and seas will begin to subside late in the weekend as another front approaches the region. Alm && Eka watches/warnings/advisories...
