Special Weather Statement  Statement as of 3:15 PM PDT on October 9, 2008

... Gusty northerly winds and much cooler temperatures for the end
of the week...
... Moderate offshore event expected early next week...

A small trough just west of British Columbia will amplify into a
very cold low pressure system and drop into Nevada by Friday
night. The cold air associated with this system will induce high
pressure at the surface to the north... setting up a strong north
to south pressure gradient over the region. This gradient... along
with a strong jet aloft... will create gusty and potentially strong
northerly winds across a large portion of southern and central
California. Wind gusts are expected to peak to around 50 mph in
the windiest spots but gusts near 60 mph... especially through the
Interstate 5 corridor... are not out of the question. These winds
will result in gale force wind gusts over 40 kt across the outer
waters.

The magnitude and drying effect of these winds will create
favorable conditions for fire growth... especially over the
interior valleys and mountain ranges.

This system will also cool the region... as most areas will see
more than 20 degrees of cooling by Saturday from what we
experienced on Wednesday. Enough cold air will reach the interior
valleys and mountains to create cold overnight temperatures.
These temperatures are expected to reach into the 30s Saturday and
Sunday morning which may result in some local frost.

As this system moves eastward... surface high pressure will shift
into the Great Basin. This is expected to result in gusty
offshore winds through and below many passes and canyons. Gusts at
this point are expected to peak in the 50 mph range. These winds
will also not only warm up temperatures yet again... but will may
also create another round of favorable conditions for explosive
fire growth.

for the later updates on this situation.

Fire Weather Watch  Statement as of 12:48 PM PDT on October 10, 2008

... Fire Weather Watch in effect from Monday morning through Tuesday
evening due to gusty northeast winds and low humidities...

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard has issued a Fire
Weather Watch... which is in effect from Monday morning through
Tuesday evening.

Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with local gusts to 40 mph can be expected
below passes and canyons on Monday. Winds across Los Angeles County will
mainly be confined from Malibu to the Hollywood Hills. In addition... humidity
levels are expected to lower to around 10 percent on Monday... possibly
lowering to single digits by Tuesday.

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions are
forecast to occur. Please advise the appropriate officials or fire
crews in the field of this Fire Weather Watch. Listen for later
forecasts and possible red flag warnings.

Southwest California area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard California
130 PM PDT Friday Oct 10 2008

Short term (today-mon)...upper low dropping south through northern California
bringing snow to the northern Sierra is expected to be centered over southern
Nevada Sat morning. With this trajectory being a little farther west
than earlier models had indicated, it appears that the core of
strongest winds aloft will also be farther west over the ocean and
western sba County. For this reason have left the High Wind Warning
in effect for the sba County mountains. However, further east over
the vtu/la County mountains the support aloft isn't quite as strong
and with the exception of the usual one or two sites above the
Interstate 5 corridor which will still gust at or above 60 tonight,
the vast majority of the vtu/la mountains should be below warning levels.
Other areas in the Wind Advisory include the Antelope Valley,
central coast, and southern sba County.

Another issue to watch tonight is the possibility for showers across
extreme eastern la County, particularly the San Gabriel Mountains models
are pretty dry across the area but with heights rapidly falling and
strong cold air advection it won't take much to generate a shower or
two. Have decided to add a slight chance of showers to the eastern san
Gabriels and some clouds and 10 probability of precipitation to the eastern San Gabriel valley
tonight just in case.

Winds will start to taper off Saturday morning but remain breezy in
most areas through the day. It will be a cool day everywhere,
especially in the mountains and Antelope Valley, with highs 15-25 degrees
below normals.

Patchy frost is possible during the early morning hours each of the
next few days across interior slow County and the Cuyama Valley as
winds drop off and cold air settles in. In the Antelope Valley winds
will be too strong tonight to get frost, but lows will likely dip to
near 30 sun and Monday mornings.

Gradients will start turning offshore Sat night with weak northeast
winds developing in the mountains and valleys late Sat night and Sunday.
The offshore flow and warm air advection will cause temperatures to warmup
several degrees Sunday, but highs still will be 5-10 degrees below
normal, especially over the mountains and deserts where the warming trend
will be much slower to take hold.

Offshore flow really increases Sunday night and Monday morning.
Northeast winds are expected to reach advisory levels in the vtu/la
valleys and perhaps the coast as well, and possibly low end warning
levels in the la/vtu mountains warming trend to continue with highs up
5-10 degrees from sunday's levels.

Long term (tue-fri)...gradients remain strongly offshore Tuesday
but upper support is weaker so winds are not expected to be quite as
strong. However, the warming trend will continue with highs well
into the 80s and lower 90s for most coastal and valley areas. High
pressure starts to break down Wednesday and Thursday but gradients are expected
to remain at least weakly offshore so skies are expected to remain
clear and highs at or above normals in most areas. May have some
cooling right at the coast due to an earlier sea breeze, otherwise
temperatures should remain about the same. A little more cooling expected
Friday as models show a trough over California.

&&

Aviation...10/2020z.

Other than a few clouds in eastern la County...skies were clear
across the forecast area. Skies will likely remain clear through
Saturday at all the taf sites. The only weather concern will be
locally gusty winds and possible low level wind shear at the favored
locations...such as kbur...kvny...and ksba.

Klax...high confidence in clear skies through Thursday.

Kbur...high confidence in clear skies through Thursday. Low level
wind shear possible late this afternoon and tonight.
