NWS Forecaster Discussion
928 fxus65 ktwc 212122 afdtwc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Tucson Arizona 220 PM MST Thursday Aug 21 2008 Synopsis...dry westerly flow aloft will limit thunderstorm chances to areas east and south of Tucson through Saturday. Some increase in moisture will result in an increased chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms Sunday through Wednesday. Above normal daytime high temperatures to occur into early next week. && Discussion...so far satellite imagery was only showing some flat cumulus clouds across Southeast Arizona this afternoon. May still see a thunderstorm or two develop over a sky island south and east of Tucson. Otherwise...expect mostly clear skies tonight with more of the same for Friday. Latest models continued to advertise a change in the flow pattern this weekend as the upper high becomes consolidated over The Four Corners region by Sunday. These rather fast transitions in the flow pattern can lead to a significant increase in thunderstorm coverage as adequate moisture advects in over a short period of time. However...not very confident right now that this moisture increase will be rapid enough to warrant increasing pop values too much in the deserts for Saturday and Sunday. For now...will show an increase in chances for the mountains and areas near the international border. The NAM solution picks up on a weak circulation near the tip of Baja California which may help keep deep convection over this area and eventually push some level-low moisture up the Gulf of California into the lower deserts. If this happens...will likely need to increase valley probability of precipitation for at least Saturday or Sunday. && Aviation...clear to partly cloudy skies across Southeast Arizona today into Friday. Just a slight chance of thunderstorms and rain mainly near the New Mexico border through 03z period then dry conditions areawide Friday. Light diurnally driven surface winds into Friday. Aviation discussion not updated for taf amendments. && Twc watches/warnings/advisories...none. $$ Weather.Gov/Tucson
