NWS Forecaster Discussion
163 fxus65 ktwc 070338 afdtwc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Tucson Arizona 835 PM MST Sat Sep 6 2008 Synopsis...a trough of low pressure along the California coast will bring a slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms mainly to areas east of Tucson during the upcoming week. Hot conditions Sunday followed by below normal daytime temperatures during the middle and latter part of the new week. && Discussion...a few showers with mainly virga developed this afternoon but had since dissipated shortly after sunset. Have updated the forecast to remove pop values and reduce sky cover for the rest of this evening and overnight. Otherwise...current forecast package looked on track as some moisture moves back into the area for a slight chance of afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms. Please refer to the previous discussion section below for more details. && Aviation...mostly clear overnight into Sunday morning. Slight chance of thunderstorms and rain east and south of ktus Sunday afternoon and evening. Light surface winds tonight into Sunday. Aviation discussion not updated for taf amendments. && Previous discussion...GFS model depicted quasi-stationary closed-low just off the central California coast Wednesday-Thursday with ridge amplification over the southern rockies. However...06/12z European model (ecmwf) depicted positive-tilt open wave trough over the western Continental U.S. Wednesday...then weaker closed-low well off the Southern California coast thur-Fri. GFS subsequently imported considerably more moisture across southern Arizona during the middle and latter part of the upcoming week versus the European model (ecmwf) solution. Given these differences...have opted to make only very minor modifications to the existing gridded data pop fields during the Wednesday-Sat period. Will reflect a slight chance of afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms Tucson metropolitan area eastward Wednesday-Friday with precipitation-free conditions west. For now will opt for low-grade probability of precipitation eastern sections Sat with dry conditions Tucson metropolitan area westward. Above normal daytime high temperatures sun-Mon...then some cooling during the middle and latter part of the upcoming week. && Twc watches/warnings/advisories...none. $$ Weather.Gov/Tucson
