NWS Forecaster Discussion
306 fxus64 klzk 281959 afdlzk Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Little Rock Arkansas 259 PM CDT Thursday Aug 28 2008 Short term...tonight through Sunday night isolated showers popped up across central/southern Arkansas this afternoon. Precipitation will dissipate this evening with the loss of daytime heating. A cold front was poised to the north of Arkansas...and will head into the area on Friday. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected along the front...mainly in the northern half of the state. Rain chances will shift into the central and southern counties Friday night and Saturday as the front slides slowly to the south. At the same time...high pressure will build aloft from the plains. Under the high...the front will likely wash out late in the weekend. At this point...there is no rain in the forecast on Sunday. During the Saturday night/Sunday time frame...tropical system Gustav may be entering the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. Gustav will be watched with great interest heading into the extended period. As far as temperatures...readings will be close to seasonal. && Long term...Monday through Thursday brought probability of precipitation up along the south and southeast to start the period...based on the current model tracking of Gustav. Kept at least slight probability of precipitation in throughout the remainder of the period to account for this tropical disturbance. These numbers may need to be bumped up in the coming days...especially if models take Gustav farther and farther west. Arkansas will be sandwiched between this system and a frontal boundary approaching north Arkansas by the end of the period. Temperatures will be near to slightly above normal to start the extended...but rain and clouds will help to gradually cool the forecast area to just below normal by the end of the period. && Preliminary point temps/pops...
