NWS Forecaster Discussion
108 fxus64 klzk 280523 aaa afdlzk Area forecast discussion...update for aviation National Weather Service Little Rock Arkansas 1225 am CDT Thursday Aug 28 2008 Aviation... VFR conditions expected next 24 hours. Some patchy fog expected overnight with possible MVFR visibilities...especially at khro...kbpk. IFR fog potential at kpbf only. Any fog will quickly dissipate after sunrise Thursday. Light south wind overnight...becoming S to SW Thursday 5 to 10 miles per hour. (59) && Previous discussion... /issued 301 PM CDT Wednesday Aug 27 2008/ Short term...tonight through Saturday night a mix of clouds and sun was noted this afternoon with isolated showers popping up. Any precipitation should diminish this evening given the loss of daytime heating...and patchy fog expected after midnight. Thursday will be a lot like today...with a ridge of high pressure beginning to build into Arkansas from the Southern Plains. Before the ridge arrives...a weak cold front will slide into the state from the north late Thursday/Friday. The high will strengthen as the front pushes into the region...with the front stalling and washing out this weekend. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast along the front. In the tropics...all eyes will be on Gustav. The system is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico as the period ends. As far as temperatures...typical summertime readings are in the forecast in the coming days. Long term...Sunday through Wednesday kept slight probability of precipitation going for just the southern portion of the state at the start of the period...as the weak frontal boundary will be washed out to the south of the area. Meanwhile a trough over the western Continental U.S. Will be digging...while Gustav continues to move towards the Gulf states. This trough will attempt to bring a cold front south into the region...affecting north Arkansas by midweek. Still some differences among the long range models with Gustav. The GFS wants to take the tropical system over eastern Louisiana by early next week...where as the European brings a more westerly track near the Texas Louisiana border by Tuesday morning. Went with more of a GFS solution and kept low probability of precipitation through the end of the extended...although this will need to be updated as models come to more of an agreement. Temperatures will be slightly above normal throughout the period. && Lzk watches/warnings/advisories...none. && $$ Short term...51 / long term...56 aviation...56
